My research focuses on the British Army and the South African War.  I just finished a project which explores the Hague Convention and the rules of war (jus in bello) as they were applied (or ignored) by the British during their campaign in the Orange Free State and Transvaal.  The article was co-written by Jessica P. Miller, Chair of Philosophy, University of Maine, and focused primarily on looting.  The article is forthcoming in War in History this summer.  I have also just completed an article investigating British surrenders in the South African War.  There were nearly 1,000 separate instances of surrender which involved more than 14,000 men and yet little has been written about these cases.  I expect to see that article appear next summer in War and Society.

Currently, I am researching Edgar Wallace’s career in South Africa.  Wallace is best known for writing King Kong and Sanders of the River.  He got his start in South Africa as a journalist and covered some of the significant events of the War.
